At HP’s Connecting Your World 2008 event in Berlin, Germany, we caught up with the CTO of HP’s Public Systems Group, Phil McKinney, who had some very interesting things to say about where HP believes the future will take us.
Phil talked with us about what’s coming in the future of technology - everything from wearable computing to a very advanced “avatar” that is programmed to make decisions just like you would, only you can send it to a meeting while you get to go play video games. We look forward to seeing what the future holds. Thanks Phil!

At HP‘s Connecting Your World event in Berlin, Germany, we talked with John Cook, VP of marketing for HP’s Consumer PC group. He gave us a hands-on first look at the beautiful new HP TouchSmart PC.
One thing we really liked about the new TouchSmart is its completely redone interface. The software looks clean, polished, useful, and eminently easy to use. It would be great, however, if the TouchSmart made more use of multi-touch. Cook demonstrates a pinch gesture in the software but that’s pretty much it. We’re keeping our eyes peeled for more multi-touch functionality in upcoming software updates and releases.

It’s 10:00. Do you know where your dog is? Or your car, or the loved one who is responsible for the car? Zoombak is aiming to make sure you never have to look far to get the answer to that question. Their advanced GPS locators come in two sizes, one perfect for placing in an auto and one made to clip on to the collar of a dog weighing 12 pounds or more.
Both versions of Zoombak offer the ability to set up “safety zones,” via the Zoombak website. When the auto or dog that is wearing the Zoombak GPS unit leaves the safety zone, Zoombak will send a text message or an email with the location of the unit, and the location can be tracked live on Zoombak’s website.
Dog and Auto units retail for $200 and $250 respectively, and Zoombak’s monthly service starts at $9.99 a month.

At Pepcom’s Digital Experience, we had a chance to interview Belkin and get an up close and personal look at all the new peripherals they introduced at CES this year. Take a look at the video to see their 4-way, USB- and audio-enabled KVM switch, available this summer for $169. Additionally, they demoed an intelligent surge protector with six individually controlled outlets and two always-on outlets. Add to this a wireless on/off switch to activate or kill the six outlets and you have a nifty device to help kill the phantom power drain that’s so prevalent in today’s chargers and adapters when they’re not in use.
We also check out a few cool iPhone and iPod peripherals and the Rockstar—a five way minijack (headphone) splitter, available for $39.95 this summer.
And finally, we take a quick look at the N52te gamer “WASD replacement” pad. With a bunch of programmable macro options, an integrated scroll wheel and just enough buttons to get things done in TF2, it’s going on sale this month for $69.99 with a first look in the video.

EcoNEW is a recycling and trade-in program for used electronics and computers. At CES, they gave us the details on how their hardware recycling program works. Just head on over to the EcoNEW website, and enter info about the product you want recycled, for which you will be given a trade-in value. Then, just print the pre-paid shipping label and send the item to NEW. Later, you will receive a gift card of the trade-in value, to be used at a participating retailer. The disposed device will be safely recycled, or refurbished for future use. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

At CES, Logitech showed us some cool gadgets to enhance your home entertainment system. First was the diNovo Mini Palm-Size Keyboard, a little larger than an eyeglass case, which controls either your media-center PC or a computer hooked-up to a TV, depending on your setup. For example, you can use the diNovo to scan through the photos on your laptop—and display them on your TV. Plus, it’s Bluetooth-enabled ...in case you’d like to type and send a text to your bud’s phone without reaching for your cell.
We also loved Logitech’s newest Harmony One remote control with touch screen. Just hook it up to your computer via USB, and the accompanying software helps you program all your devices (and more) to the remote. This one will be available at the end of January for $250 USD.

Case Logic showed off a series of bags at CES this year. Their cases range from protecting the smallest of iPod Nano’s to the largest of Laptops. In this video, we give you a look at bags designed for customization by the user, which included pens and Sharpie markers, as well as stencils to help you…well…make it you. Could you technically write on any bag that you purchase? Sure, but would it be as fun? We’d like to think so, but we are some stencil-needing fools. In any event, check the video out to learn more about these stylish totes.

Sandisk is experimenting with doing away with boring old thumb drives in favor of something a little more personal. Their new prototype jewelry is designed as an accessory first, and technology second. Amazingly well hidden within the stylish exterior is a miniscule USB plug for access to it’s treasure trove of digital memories. These are not yet on the market but should be soon - keep your eyes (and pocket book) peeled.

While at CES, we got the opportunity to check out the AMD Smart House. The Smart House is a demonstration by AMD of all the different ways that their processors can help enhance day-to-day life of every day consumers. The Mother/Father/Daughter/Sun schtick is a bit thick at times, but the potential of the smart home of the future shines through nonetheless.
