Bleeding Edge TV 190: How to Replace Your iPhone Battery

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Full Episodes, Gizmatic, Apple, Cell Phones, Features, Handhelds, Podcasts, Portable Audio / Video, Videocasts

has locked down the battery, which means that once it can’t hold a charge, you need to send it in. If you’d rather just buy your own battery and replace it yourself, we’ve got your hookup. Nate and I got together to film this this tutorial, which shows how to replace your iPhone battery. Heck, even if you have decided that you will never open up your iPhone on your own, we think it’s still pretty cool to see the process - so just hit play, okay?

Oh, and just to be sure we’re all clear, we take absolutely no responsibility if you try and replicate what you see in our video and end up bricking or damaging your phone. Okay, happy viewing!

Here's how to get the show:

Revive a waterlogged iPhone by drowning it in Rubbing Alcohol?  Maaaaaaaaaan quit lying!

Would you mind doing a follow up video, where we short the battery, and allow it to explode?  ( safely of course )

You can avoid any problems with shorting out the wires by desoldering the ground wire first.

Alternatively, as the new battery seems to be supplied with wires, just snip the old wires from the old battery and then desolder them from the phone.

umm… Correct me if I’m wrong but the iPhone did not work properly after the battery was replaced.

Considering that the iPhone battery lasts longer and holds a longer charge than most every phone on the planet, and that the whole battery “issue” was way overblown, I’m not sure many people will get much from this video.

Never mind the fact that your iPhone didn’t work properly after installation…

Also, I wouldn’t take advice from someone who thinks that 100 degrees Celsius is 600 degrees Fahrenheit.  You’re only off by a couple hundred there buddy.

For starters, 300 Degrees C is 572 Degrees F, so our friend above is bashing others to make himself feel better without realizing that he is very wrong, himself.

Secondly, if you haven’t screwed your phone’s warranty by unlocking it, just take it to an apple store or mail it off.  The Apple store will give it back to you right away and if you have to mail it off, just throw your SIM in an old phone (borrow one from a friend if you switched from Verizon, etc.)

It’s fantastic you can replace your battery for under $30.  I got my AppleCare off of ebay for $50, so I’ll worry about spending $30 after my battery was replaced a couple of times for me under my 2 year coverage.

Buy some lights and leave the iPhone alone.

sweet neck beards.

I love how they do this on tile. I bet the screen and sides are scratched all to crap. How bout putting it on a cloth surface.

Nate….true. I love it

Just wanted to see if this message board is filtered for offensive lanquage like #### #### ##### DICK CUNT BASTARD AND OF COURSE making love.

Since you’re not re-using the wires, why don’t you just cut them before unsoldering? Then you don’t have to worry about shorting the battery.

Love the comments guys - as Danny Elfman said, “now is that gratitude?” I hope this video is still around when my battery needs replacing. Just one note to improve the process:

Shouldn’t he remove the black and white wires first since one of those is ground? Your risk of shorting the battery is greatly reduced if done in this order since you then only have to prevent the wires from touching each other - much less likely than preventing the hot wire from contacting any part of the phone while still grounded.

why not discharge the phone to reduce the risk of shock/discharge!?!

why the hell didn´t you take another surface…i would kill you if this was my iphone .. and you rubbing it over them tiles… omg

but else.. good work :D

Nice video. Do you plan on making one for the iPod touch? Thanks.

Ok this video was pointless because in it you did it on tile and stated “this is probably better if you do it with you’re 2nd iphone so in case it breaks you have a backup” oh yeah because alot of people walk around with backup iphones hmmm…not hell to be honest i couldn’t afford one but i was lucky enough to find one! so yep i won’t be buying a “backup” one and 2nd it didn’t even work after you replaced it wow you can still use it for notes and the notes were comming out even all ragedy when time comes for me to replace it I won’t do it myself because not even you guys could do it you’reselves and you’re the “experts” STOP BEING CHEAP PEOPLE! AND LET APPLE OR A 3RD PARTY REPLACE IT! YOU WERE STUPID ENOUGH TO PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR IT!

negativity attracts negativity. negative comments are a wasted energy. if you cant say something nice, better not say anything at all.

Cruel words can make or kill a person’s well being. Be careful on what you write because words have the power to hurt other people’s feelings and if not counseled properly, hatred can cause many saddening problems to the psyche of those you have offended.

nate did something nice that many appreciate. i for one is thankful to you Nate for sharing the video.

My constructive advise is make a new video with the right soft surface and research a bit on the soldering iron’s working temperature.

BTW Nate thank you for iBricker grin

God bless.

hmm posting again, my first post didn’t seem to work, the url there isn’t my site, it’s ipodjuice.com..
Wow I’d never break into my iPhone myself!  Before I bought mine I checked into my options when the battery wears out and found that ipodjuice.com has added an iPhone battery replacement service.  I trust them too, got my new ipod mini battery from them a while back and they are a great company to work with.  Yikes, let them do it, don’t break your phone!
Meow smile Laura

Great job ! Thank you. It`s very helpful for me

It’s good for us people that have bought an iPhone but do not live in the US. I really doubt Apple in Australia are going to replace the battery in an iPhone.

those 3 little silver things on the motherboard after you remove the battery what if one falls off? will i have to buy a new motherboard?

Really really great technical video, thanks I learned a lot from it. The big guy on the side is annoying though. He asks too many dumb questions and disrupts the otherwise well filmed video. Keep it up and keep shooting these kind of videos! And please leave the big guy out next time.

By the way, if you’re afraid of the red wire touching the surface of the iPhone (grounded)... there is another way to do this! In basic auto mechanics for changing batteries, they tell you to always remove the black (ground) wire first so that the body will not be a conductor, THEN remove the red wire.

You can do the same thing for iPhone. Remove the black first and you’ll remove the surface as a conductor, then remove the rest later.

how can i get the battery, and where?

hey thanks for the video very helpfull I changed my iphone battery succesfully…. everything works except now the home button, the speaker, microphone and itunes does not detect myu iphone…. all these problem are located in the bottom of my phone.. could this have anything to do with replacing the battery ? cuz before that everything worked fine ... plzzz help me !

Great job on the video. Thanks for the information.

My wife and I liked the funny comments the “big guy” made along the way—- it made the time spent watching an enjoyable learning experience.  (Much like when I got a speeding ticket ten years ago, and worked it off by going to “comedy” traffic school—-6 hours required class-time.)

“i was lucky enough to find one!”

ah, so your one of the D*uche bag people who find phones and keep them.
Well, F- you.

Be a good person and make an effort to return it. Or like the taxi drive that offered to return my phone ‘for a fee’ , you could at least ransom it - my phone data (phone book, pics) is far more valuable to me than the cost of my phone.

shut the hell up people he’s done more with the iphone than you ever tried lets see you do something to change the evolutuion of the iphone all you possers and the only reason that phone didnt go into apps was the guy had and installation malfunction…

SO SHUT THE HELL UP AND GIVE THANX JERK OFFS!!!!!!!

this video player is awful.  you cant even seek

I don’t know if mine is glued up but no way to open the iphone, and now i have to buy a new rear cover. thx

Maybe you guys could lean some video skills.  You can’t see well with no light. I weep for our future.

Thanks to your instructions I have replaced the battery for my 4GB 1st gen iPhone quick and easy, btw I got the battery mad cheap with free shipping and tools from megacapacity web site: http://www.megacapacity.com/23446.html

Maybe you could “lean” to type.

nice job. As more people start to buy these old used iphones (like me) this should get a lot more traffic.

I highly suggest you don’t try this yourself. I have a lot of experience in electronics and repair. I ruined an IPHONE in the process of changing the battery. It just isn’t that easy. The soldering is the hardest part. The red solder point often contacts the metal frame unless you use a microscope solder iron. If you try to remove the solder, it can come off the circuit board and at that point it is impossible to get solder to stick again on the solder joint.

I even connected the wires just to see if I had not messed up the soldering what would happen. The phone crashes on start each time, even after restore and charging.

I learned my lesson the hard way and no I am on the way to store to buy a new phone :(

be careful

This is a great video. I just learned that my comms board sits on top of the main board so my messed up iphone now can be fixed really easy smile
Plus as its the comms board thats soldered to the battery i can just swop and clip and done.

MANY THANKS for this video. LIFE SAVERS lol

:D

Excellent vid.. Thanks!

I wonder if your site has the same for the 3G.

The phone would have worked better if they’d remembered to put the SIM tray back in…

Great job guys!

Don’t even do it.  It’s so not worth it.  Besides this is a 2g iphone.  What’s the point of opening a 2g iphone when 3g is out?

You just saved me a lot of money.  I have had my phone since they day they came out.  My phone has taken a beating for almost two years and I hope to get another 2 years out of it.

Great DIY video.
