Bleeding Edge TV 311: Hauppauge HD PVR 1212 review

We got our hands on the Hauppauge HD PVR 1212 personal video recorder, and we bring you a review of this unit in this episode. The Hauppage HD PVR 1212 connects to your peripherals using component cable, and then goes out to your display over component as well. It captures the video output live, and records it to a computer, which will then let you edit that video. It is fantastic at recording video game sessions in full HD resolution, as we demonstrate in the video. Take a look, and if you want one, you can pick up the Hauppauge HD PVR 1212 on Amazon.

Here's how to get the show:
|Download| - iPod-formatted H.264
|Download| - Apple TV High Resolution

Curious about the details of this device -

What software does it ship with?
Is it Mac compatible?
What video file format does it generate?
Does it accept 720p, 1080p, and/or 1080i signals?
The video looked good, but at what bit rate does it compress?
Is the bit rate variable?

Also, just a little nitpicky detail, component video is analog, despite it being an HD.

I have purchased this unit. Just to answer some of your questions Randy. Here:

What software does it ship with?
Unit, Manual, Component Cables, Remote Control, Power Cable,  A IR Blaster So The Scheduler Can Send Signals To Your Cable/Satellite Receiver To Change Channels, and umm I think thats it as far as I remember. You can find this info easily, just do a quick google search.

Is it Mac compatible?
Wasnt when I bought it but now it is. I dont think it is with the software it comes with but I know 100% there is 3rd part software that does this for this unit now.

What video file format does it generate?
Either .ts Transport Streams or M2TS Files.

Does it accept 720p, 1080p, and/or 1080i signals?
Excepts 720P and 1080i, not 1080P though. It auto switchs to whatever resolution your inputing. Like you’ll see if you change the setting on your satellite/cable receiver to output 1080i instead of 720P, you’ll see in the program it shows you which resolution is being input to the unit and which its recording.
The video looked good, but at what bit rate does it compress?
You can set the bit rate. You can set it to record all the way from 0.2 Mbps to 13.0 Mbps.

Is the bit rate variable?
There a drop down box where you can select if you want it to be constant or variable. If you select variable, the setting where you set the bitrate will be for the max bitrate you want it to hit.

Also, just a little nitpicky detail, component video is analog, despite it being an HD.
Yes component is technicaly analog but looks amazing, and cant carry encryption. HDMI on the other hand carries HDCP and when its using HDCP you can NOT record from it.

Hope this helps….

Oops forgot to mention, for the audio you can select either AC3 or AAC as the audio codec you want it to use. If you can the optical audio cable hooked up it can also record 5.1 surround sound with these new drivers, which wasnt possible when this unit was first released.
