Stream this video to your iPhone
The second in our series of Asus Eee PC how-to videos, this episode features instructions on how to activate the Eee PC‘s hidden Full Desktop Mode, a power-user mode featuring a launcher similar to the Start menu from Windows. Additionally, Nate True demonstrates how to activate Beryl, a 3d desktop effect engine that adds stunning visual effects to your desktop, including windows that stretch and wobble like Jell-O when you move them around and a rotating desktop cube display.
The process to install and activate Beryl is a bit involved, though the results are quite worth it. Check out the video for the details - and as promised, here are the two long lines so you can copy and paste them to your console:
To authorize the community Eee PC repository:
curl http://download.tuxfamily.org/eeepcrepos/key.asc | sudo apt-key add -
Remember the trailing hyphen (-) IS required. To authorize the Beryl repository:
curl http://debian.beryl-project.org/root@lupine.me.uk.gpg | sudo apt-key add -
Again, the ending hyphen (-) is required. We have a few more Eee PC hacks on the way, so be sure you are subscribed so you don’t miss any.

Hey, this doesnt work.
1. eee doesnt come with curl
2. need to install curl so do sudo apt-get install curl
3. that wont work so do
4. sudo dpkg—configure -a
5. then you can install curl, but thats where i cant go any further.
at the line
curl http://download.tuxfamily.org/eeepcrepos/key.asc | sudo apt-key add -
nothing happens
No curl for me either. I was so stoked too. The eeepc user.com wiki method does not work for me. I have a 2g surf model.
PLEASE HELP!
if you notice, in the initial terminal window, he types http as htttp (ie, three t’s)! and it worked :S
Ro
I got full desktop mode working. but I have problems installing beryl.
to the curl problem… use wget instead. download the key file and then cat it and pipe it to apt-key like this:
cat key.asc | sudo apt-key add -
as for the beryl installation… synaptic gives me an error when trying to install the packages. it looks like it didn’t accept they key downloaded earlier because it says the packages are from untrusted sources.
Install problems resolved (installed it using apt-get instead of synaptic), everything set up but now when I start beryl-manager the screen goes blank and a few seconds later it’s totally messed up so I can’t read anything on it anymore.
unfortunalty I haven’t found anyone with similar problems yet.
Problems with beryl finally solved. Make sure to set DefaultDepth in Section “Screen” to 24 if it’s not already set.
hi friends,
i’ve tried with “wget” instead of “curl” and it works BUT synaptica says me that tuxfamily is not avalaible….!!! :S
ok i got it running, but now when i go to open the beryl manager my screen goes all funky colors and doesnt return to normal, how long should I wait? or have i screwed something up?
Check Message #111 here:

You need to set DefaultDepth from 16 to 24 in xorg.conf
That should get it working.
I installed Beryl, but when i click on the beryl manager and click select window manager and i click beryl, it changes back to KDE. Why? How can i fix it? Please please please answer.
BOC. download all of the march 8th 2008 updates per settings.
ctrl-alt-t, and type sudo synaptic. Low and behold the extended desktop is an option. mark it and kicker for download…apply…apply…etc. etc.
hit the power off button and there is the desktop icon.
now that you have just allowed the hackers, as I did, to compromise your system by following “to the letter” their instructions….remember…there’s a fool born every minute…
Thanks for the vid, it’s very helpful. I wonder if it would work on other laptops as well, that run the same linux distribution. Oh, and about the video - whenever I tried to skip to a different frame, it restarted , which is kinda annoying, maybe you could tell me how to fix this.
I’ve activated Full Desktop Mode on my Eee PC without any problems. Thank You!
Hi, I have an EEE PC 701 and I am trying to get full desktop to work. I can’t use curl in the first step of the video, and if I leave it out it tells me I’m not using apt-key correctly.
I can get into synaptic and put the repository in but when I reload there is no advanced desktop option. Has it been removed from the repository? Can I do it another way? I am fairly new to LINUX but am liking it lots…...PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks.
