While the release of the newly redesigned aluminum and glass iMac have been fantastic, the fact that they ship with just 1 GB of RAM by default isn’t so exciting. We knew immediately that this called for a RAM upgrade in the iMac, and we were happy to find that installation has gotten easier and easier as new iMac models are released (although there is a particular spot of trouble, which is featured at the end of the video in the outtakes.) In the past, we been both disappointed and delighted with iMac RAM installation. In this episode, we show you how to upgrade the RAM in the new iMac in a step-by-step manner - at a far less expensive price than you would have to pay Apple to do it. Hit the video for the full scoop.

I am so happy that I’ve found this video. Without it I would never install iMac RAM! Thanks

Just like to add that. If you have any issues with your Mac that would require you to take to any Genius Bar at an Apple Store, they will offer you very little support if third party RAM is installed. If some form of repair is needed that would require checking the machine in, they will require you to remove all third party RAM and reinstall Apple OEM RAM.
Also, it would be wise to be properly grounded when handling RAM. ESD isn’t something that has happened to me frequently but better be safe than sorry and have two 200+ dollar paperweights. Plus, i wouldn’t touch the copper edges of RAM because the oils on your skin can can corrosion on the RAM chip and slot.

You’re not required to have Apple RAM for them to service. They have taken care of me over the years with third party RAM installed.
They did ask me whether my RAM was Apple or third party, but they never told me I had to replace or remove before testing it out. Of course, I believe one of the first causes they want to rule out is faulty RAM.
I’m sure different techs at different stores may pull that, but I never experienced it.

I been doing tech work on Macs since 1986 and also agree with the comment on not touching the gold connection points on the RAM chip, it’s best to hold it on the plastic edges. Grounding yourself is also something any tech manual will tell you. If you don’t have a wrist ground strap you can touch one of the metal components with one hand to ground yourself.

An obvious question is what should one do with the left over 1GB RAM ? Is it computer waste ?

sell it on ebay of course!

OWC will pay you for your old RAM that you removed from your Mac.

How do you ground yourself with an aluminum case? I have a static wristband but can’t figure out how to ground myself. One advice was that I shouldn’t unplug the electric cord so I connect to the ground in the outlet but I still wouldn’t know where to place the wristband clip… to what metal… where?

I can’t take out the 1GB RAM. It wont come out. Do u have the video that u cutout. I tried to nudge the side lightly with a phillips but did a little wary of damaging the 1GB.

I saw the 1st video 20 minutes ago. .After last post. rewatched u’re video. The RAM was out in < a minute. Installed 4GB w/o any issue.

Is it not possible to leave the 1GB RAM which came with the computer and use a 2GB of RAM which has come from another supplier? Is it also true that the computer will only use 3 GB regardless of having 4GB in the computer.

The new aluminum iMacs will use all 4 GB of RAM. Older ones will use 3 GB.

What about mixing up the ram? will it be ok to have an apple gig and also a couple of orca gigs?

so i bought two gbs on one stick and installed them on the other bay (or port) then I would be able to have 3 GBs? Would they all show up and function?

I was wondering, the ram that you installed in the iMac, is that the same as the ram used in the new macbook pro’s? I currently use one of the new MBP’s and I was going to upgrade the ram on it to 4gigs; with the left over 2gigs ram I was wondering if I could install in my mother’s iMac. She uses the basic iMac because she doesn’t do anything else besides surf the web and talk to family overseas.
